Pumps move fluid from one place to another. They are essential to many applications involving a flow of fluids. They also come in many shapes and sizes, and can be made from a wide variety of materials and are designed with various types of motors.

Types of Pumps

The two types of pump designs are the centrifugal pump and the positive displacement pump. The centrifugal pump uses impellers to move the fluid around, which works to pressurize the fluid being discharged. The centrifugal pump is an ideal choice for all types of liquids, especially low-viscosity fluids that have high flow rates.

Positive displacement pumps are designed with a cavity in the suction side, which can expand while the cavity on the discharge side can decrease in volume. The fluid flows from the cavity side to the suction side, causing the suction side to expand and the discharge side to collapse.

Measuring Pump Performance

Pumps can be compared using the speed and energy of fluid movement. The speed is measured in gallons per minute, while the power of the motors is measured in horsepower.

The net positive suction head, or NPSH, is a measure of how powerful a pump is. The NPSH available is the absolute pressure at the suction port of the pump, while the NPSH required is a measure of the minimum pressure required at the suction port of the pump to prevent cavitation.

The efficiency of a pump is measured as a ratio of the power the pump exerts on the fluid versus the power supplied to the pump by the motor. The efficiency of a particular pump usually depends on the discharge and the operating head, and is therefore not a fixed value.

For most pumps, the efficiency will increase as the flow rate of the fluid increases. However, this is only up to the point of peak efficiency, also known as the best efficiency point, beyond which the pump efficiency drastically declines.

End-suction pumps have a broad range of applications across many industries. Examples of industries that use them include air conditioning, heating and ventilation, refrigeration, drainage and sprinkler systems.

Vertical In-Line Pumps

The vertical in-line pumps are a popular type of centrifugal pump that are highly efficient at transferring fluids. They have a specially designed shaft and bearing support system that allows the pump’s volute to stay in the pump, while at the same time, the bearings remain on the outside of the pump.

Vertical in-line pumps can be used in operations where the fluid in a piping system needs pressurization, such as for hot water circulation in commercial buildings as well as irrigation systems on farms.

Vertical Multi-Stage Pumps

The vertical multi-stage pumps can be recognized by their distinctive long and narrow look. They are highly efficient, and are created by putting together a series of impellers and volutes. These impellers and volutes combinations are known as the stages inside the pump.

Vertical multi-stage pumps can be used in groundwater extraction where water from the water table in the soil is extracted, either for consumption processes or to lower the water table before a scheduled excavation. They can also be used to provide the fluid pressure for high-pressure shower systems, as well as providing the boiler feed water and de-superheated feed water.
