Vertical multi-stage pumps are easily recognizable by their distinctive long and narrow look. They are highly efficient and can help the user save on energy costs. These pumps are created by putting together a series of impellers and volutes known as the stages inside the pump.

Pump Design Principle

Vertical multi-stage pumps are designed based on the principle that you can connect several pumps together to create a system where one pump’s discharge water will go into the next pump’s suction area.

The flow rate for this system of pumps is the same as the flow rate of each of the pumps in the series. However, only the pressure will differ as each pump in the series will add increasing amounts of pressure. The total pressure gained in the entire system is calculated by adding the respective pressures gained per pump.

How Multi-Stage Pumps Work

The vertical multi-stage pump functions in the same way as a system of connected pumps. It features a combined system of impellers. The impellers are the rotating component of the pump that is usually made of iron, aluminum, steel or brass. Their primary purpose is to aid in energy transfer between the pump’s motor to the fluid inside the pump. This is done by pushing a stream of energy to accelerate the fluid outwards from the center.

Since the multiple impellers are mounted on one or more shafts, this means any fluid passing through the impellers will gain additional pressure from each impeller inside the pump. The fluid is also directed to the center of the pump after each stage, before being moved to the outer-diameter to be discharged.

The way the impellers in a vertical multi-stage pump are connected play a major role in the pressure and flow output of the pump. For higher fluid pressures at the point of discharge, the impellers need to be connected in a series on the same shaft. However, to get a higher flow rate, the impellers must be on parallel shafts.  

The amount of pressure created by the vertical multi-stage pump is dependent on many factors, with the most important being the number of stages inside the pump. Other factors that affect the pressures created include the diameter of the impellers and the rate the impellers are operating.

The diameter of the vertical multi-stage pump is also proportional to the flow capacity of the pump. This makes multi-stage pumps ideal for areas where low flow rates, combined with high head flows, are required.

Multi-Stage Pump Applications

Examples of typical applications for vertical multi-stage pumps include groundwater extraction where water from the water table in the soil is extracted, either for consumption processes or to lower the water table before a scheduled excavation. They can also be used to provide the fluid pressure for high-pressure shower systems, as well as to provide the boiler feed water and de-superheated feed water.

Vertical multi-stage pumps possess a tight clearance between the impeller and volute system. This is based on their design, as the combined impeller and volute system allows all the impellers to operate at their highest efficiency levels. Even though this makes the vertical multi-stage pump ideal for tight areas, this also makes them difficult to use for processes involving liquids with abrasives, solids or fibrous materials.
